Frequently Asked Questions
About International Standards Conversions
Q. Someone sent me a VHS tape from Germany. While the tape looks like others I have and fits in my machine, it doesn’t play on my VCR. Why?
A. Even though the tape is the same, the way it’s recorded is not. Every country sets its own standards for video playback. Therefore, videos from one country may not play on a video player in another country.
Q. What about a video I made in the U.S.? Can It be viewed in England, for example?
A. No. The U.S. uses a recording system called NTSC, while England uses a system called PAL. You have to convert the video from NTSC to PAL in order for someone in England to view it.
Q. Does this problem affect DVD’s or digital format videotapes, too?
A. Yes, it’s the recording system that determines where a DVD or tape will play back.
Q. Will I get back my original media?
A. Yes, the conversion process does not damage your original.
